Planting Sweet Corn & Lima Beans

I planted my sweet corn yesterday and I always plant it a little late. Within a mile of me the farmers plant at least a thousand acres of field corn. When my sweet corn is ready to harvest, the raccoons have already been eating the field corn for several days and never find mine. I used to use an electric fence but by planting a little late I've had no raccoon damage in 20 years.
Today I planted Fordhook 242 bush type lima beans. Not quite a full 90 foot row. A little room left for a little more stuff.

Garden update

Flat leaf parsley was started under a board and transplanted with a bulb planter.
Three cauliflower.
Also three red cabbage.
This lettuce mix was a free sample from a seed company. My neighbor calls it "floor sweepings".
I hoed the garlic yesterday and it took all of three minutes.
Copra onions are responding well to the mulch.

Mother nature

On Mothers Day morning mother nature put a heavy blanket of frost on my potato patch but I was ready.

I've had potatoes freeze off lots of times before and they will come back, but as far along as these are I would rather not take the chance.

Mulching onions

I mulch my onions with grass clipping. I do it to conserve moisture. Onions can never go dry during there entire growing season if you expect a proper yield. The mulch will considerably reduce the need for irrigation. Weed control is just a bonus. I've already hand hoed them five times. The only other thing I mulch in my entire garden is tomatoes and that will have to wait for another post.

First warm weather crops

Green beans, okra, acorn squash, butternut squash, zucchini, cucumber, muskmelon and watermelon seeds are now in the ground. The picture is of the green beans. I will make four plantings of green beans in three and one half week intervals for a constant supply until frost.

Rhubarb Seed Stalks

Seed stalks on rhubarb plants should be removed as soon as they appear. A lot of energy is used to produce seeds that should be directed to the root. The seed stalks only appear for a couple of weeks in the spring.

Morel mushrooms

No, I did not pick the Morel mushrooms from my garden. I picked them in a near by woods. They are quite a treat in the spring.
