I plant my cabbage seeds under a board. I use a two by four but you can use something bigger if you need more plants. In hot weather they will germinate in 48 hours so take the board off at that time. In cooler weather it may take as long as 5 days. I plant several cabbage seeds about every 10 days and have a constant supply all season. Broccoli also works well and I have done parsley. The potential is unlimited.
I'm a slightly older gardener than you, but have just been gardening since 1962. I have never direct sown either cabbage or broccoli.

Do you go by the date or the soil temperature. This method really grabbed my attention.
The temperatures last week were in the mid fifty's in the day and mid thirty's at night. I also planted them on the south side of the house. In a couple of weeks I'll plant some more directly in the garden. This method really works!

It's about 9 days later. Have you taken the boards off yet?
ReplyDeleteThe seeds germinated and I took the board off on Sunday. Monday morning the tiny plants were gone. Bugs, slugs, or critters. Replanted on Monday and added broccoli. That's gardening.
